About the Program
Bethany Letalien, Management Analyst for the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) will discuss the need for government decision makers who are managers and leaders at the highest level -- but not subject matter experts on the latest technologies -- to have easy ways to understand emerging technologies and the philosophy that ties them together. Bethany will review how APIs and apps are a major part of emerging technologies and provide some examples of how government agencies can collaborate and make good use of this technology to further mission.

Speaker Bio
Bethany Letalien is a Management Analyst for the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) in the office of the Chief Information Officer (CIO). She provides strategic and analytical support on a range of topics, including transparency and collaboration, implementation of the Digital Government Strategy, plain language, and innovative approaches to agency challenges such as performance management and employee development.
Ms. Letalien arrived at OPM in 2009 as a Presidential Management Fellow (PMF) and graduated from the program in 2011. During that time, she completed a rotational assignment in records management with the Institute of Museum and Library Studies.
Prior to beginning her PMF experience, Ms. Letalien received a doctorate in Information Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. Her field research, funded by a Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowship, took her to a shantytown in Brazil for nearly two years, during which time she worked with a local non-profit organization on institution building, as well as the construction of a reading room and classrooms for children and adults.
Ms. Letalien’s first introduction to Federal employment was in the 1990s, when she spent two years at the Hispanic Division of Library of Congress. There, she worked on a variety of topics pertinent to the Portuguese-speaking world, including Portuguese immigrants to the United States.
Ms. Letalien holds a Masters of Information Studies, MA in Communication, and MA in Latin American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin, as well as a BS in Portuguese from Georgetown University.
A native of Bristol, CT and a dog lover, Ms. Letalien is passionate about equal access to information and social inclusion for all people. She is also drawn to the topics of technology, language, and culture. Not a natural athlete, she challenged herself for some 20 years through competitive swimming and has recently rediscovered the joys (and pains) of water polo.
